A holistic approach to fault management: wheels within a wheel

چکیده
Systems with high dependability requirements are increasingly relying on complex on-line fault management systems to function in a wide range of scenarios. Fault management systems involve a combination of multiple steps – monitoring, data analysis, planning and execution – that are typically independently developed and optimized. We argue that it is inefficient and ineffective to improve any particular fault management step without taking into account its interactions and dependencies with the rest of the steps. Through six real-life examples, we demonstrate this inefficiency and how it results in systems that either under-perform or are over-budget. We propose instead a holistic approach to fault management that is aware of, respects, and explicitly considers, the couplings between the different fault management steps, to produce a system that meets its cost, performance and dependability objectives better than is done today.

متن کاملYaw Rate Control and Actuator Fault Detection and Isolation for a Four Wheel Independent Drive Electric Vehicle
In this paper, a new actuator fault detection and isolation method for a four wheel independent drive electric vehicle is proposed. Also, a controller based on sliding mode control method is proposed for lateral stability of the vehicle. The proposed control method is designed in three high, medium and low levels. At the high-level, the vehicle desired dynamics such as longitudinal speed refere...
متن کاملLife Estimation in the Railway Wheels Under the Influence of Residual Stress Field
This paper presents the prediction of fatigue life and crack propagation in the railway wheel due to the stress field caused by mechanical loads and press fitting process of a railway wheel. A 3-D nonlinear stress analysis model has been applied to estimate stress fields of the railway wheel in press fitting process. Finite element analysis model is presented applying the elastic–plastic fin...
متن کاملWheelset Condition Monitoring based on pass-by vibration signals
Apart from regular wheel wear such as decreasing wheel diameters and reduced flange thicknesses and heights, wheel flats (WF) and oval wheels (or OOR, Out-Of-Roundness) are the most common wheelset problems for railway vehicles. Within the FP7 Research Project “Saferail”, APT has developed an innovative wheelset monitoring system so-called “Wheel flat and Out of Roundness Monitoring (WORM) syst...
متن کاملon Minizing Mechanical Stresses of the Rail Way Wheels
The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of elastic-plastic stresses under severe drag braking. A railway wheel performs three tasks, aiding in trian movement, supporting the car load, and acting as a brake drum. Finite element computer programs are developed for elasto-plastic stress analysis. An attempt is made here to find an improved fillet profile of the wheel with the intention ...
